Montevideo, Uruguay, is a short 2.5 hour ferry ride from Buenos Aires so we had to check it out. It’s a lovely city - I’m glad we went - but it is SOOOO expensive! We paid more for taxis and meals than we would have in Canada. It’s hard to understand how people survive here. We started our Montevideo experience by going to the local market for lunch. We had the most delicious, perfectly undercooked steak amidst both wonderful and not so wonderful smells, in an overcrowded, exciting and expensive indoor market in the city centre. We relaxed for the first time since arriving in South America, and then strolled along the streets, stopping for iced coffee. Which wasn’t exactly iced. We spent the afternoon exploring - we saw the Plaza Independencia and the Parliament buildings, which are rated in the top ten most beautiful in the world. We drove along La Ramblas, which is the longest boardwalk in the world. I expected this to be a little different than it was, as it borders the River Plata and not the ocean as expected. The water was - well, brown. Not super pretty, but the world famous Parque Rodo made up for it. This is one of the most beautiful parks I have seen in all my travels - an oasis in the middle of the city. We loved it so much we spent some more time there the next day. Plus, it was free! LOL. There were marijuana stores and symbols all over so I asked someone about it - apparently marijuana has been legal in Uruguay for 5 years. People were smoking it everywhere. Who knew? Before we left we took a tour of the Salvo building (once the tallest building in South America). Our tour involved taking an elevator to the top for views of the city from a tiny, enclosed space. The highlight of the city for me were the colourful doors and balconies and the rundown buildings. There is such beauty in age and such life in the colours.
